Security takes on a new meaning in view of the Internet of Things (IoT). During the workshops that took place within the CYBERSEC conference in Kraków one could observe how a security specialist is able – in a simple and quick manner (in a few dozen seconds) – to gain access to e.g. an intelligent door lock of a given manufacturer and remotely open the access door to a house. This demonstrates the numerous challenges posed to technology creators and shows how much has to be done in that area.What are the nearest challenges in the scope of cyber security for us?One challenge is promoting safe solutions while simultaneously avoiding limitations of the industry’s development. The risk related to the pressure to implement products quickly and cost-effectively at the expense of security and not taking into account issues related to ensuring protection already at the stage of creating technologies will be generating the need to apply additional cyber security solutions.Several decades ago, the revolution related to electricity was tied to similar challenges. The manufacturers would create dangerous devices that caused i.a. fires. At that time, the insurance industry so to say imposed the improvement of the quality of their equipment on the manufacturers by introducing safety certificates and by refusing to insure houses equipped in devices that did not have the appropriate attestations.It is difficult to say how the security issues in case of the IoT will be regulated and whether it will be done by the market or the legislators. However, it is worth noting that in the case of bank applications, the banks are responsible for the security of the financial resources and that this results from legal regulations. In the IoT, regulations of that kind are currently nonexistent.Security is a real challenge for startups developing technologies and products in this category – a very promising one indeed.On October 9^th and 10^th, 2017, Kraków hosted the 3rd European Cyber Security Forum – the CYBERSEC. During this event, Wojciech Fedorowicz, the managing partner of TDJ Pitango Ventures, took part in a panel discussion entitled “CEE as a field of investments. How to attract a VC fund into your startup?”CYBERSEC is one of the most important periodic events devoted to the strategic aspects of cyberspace and cyber security. It meets the growing demand for debate concerning the strategic challenges of digital transformation. Its aim is to work out practical and innovative solutions strengthening the cyber security in the European Union and NATO.
